Psychiatry

What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is the medical speciality devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study and treatment of mental disorders.  These include various abnormalities related to mood, behaviour, cognition and perceptions.

What does a Psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist is a physician who specialises in psychiatry and is certified to treat mental illnesses.  They are medical doctors who evaluate patients to determine whether their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental ailments, or strictly psychiatric.

What does the treatment involve?

The combined treatment of psychiatric medication and psychotherapy has become the most common mode of psychiatric treatment in current practice.  Some treatments will be performed with a psychologist as a co-therapist.

Treatment at the IHCH is delivered on an outpatient basis, depending on the severity of functional impairment or other aspects of the disorder in question.  For more severe disorders, a larger scale of treatment options may be necessary.  Therefore, patients  with these severe types of disorders should be treated in a centre where a more comprehensive mental healthcare program can be offered.

What types of consultations are possible with the Psychiatrist via the IHCH?

  • Diagnostic
  • Medication
  • Treatment
  • Second Opinion

For what types of disorders do you offer treatment?

  • Psychotic disorders (not severe)
  • Affective disorders, including depressive and biopolar disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality disorders (not severe)
  • Addictions (not severe)
  • Adjustment disorders
  • ADHD (adults)
