Dr. Irene Smeeman, G.P.

Irene Smeeman was born in Voorburg. As daughter of a Dutch diplomat she spent a large part of her childhood as an expat in different parts of the world, including the Philippines, Belgium, Pakistan and Brazil. After graduating high school she started medical school in Leiden in 1992. She joined the Royal Dutch Army as a military doctor after graduating from Leiden University in 1998. During her service in de army she studied another three years at Leiden University Medical Centre, qualifying as a General Practitioner in 2005.

As part of the military service she was deployed to Bosnia and Afghanistan.

In 2016 Dr Smeeman resigned from the army to start working as a freelance GP in a family practice in ’s-Gravenzande, a position she currently still holds three days a week. Since January of 2018 she started working one day a week at the International Health Center, on Tuesdays.

Passionate about sharing het medical knowledge and experience, Dr Smeeman additionally teaches first and second year medical students at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Furthermore she volunteers with the Dutch Red Cross as trauma-trained GP at large national events, festivals and sports tournaments.

Dr Smeeman enjoys the whole field of family medicine. She has a special interest in sportsmedicine,  minor surgical procedures, medical taping and small gynaecological procedures including insertion of an IUD.
